CITY BELTS USE PIX TO POWER THE JUBILEE LINE – 2/09/05

City Belts and Bearings Ltd, one of the UK’s most successful distributors of drive components to the buildings services industry, are working with EMCOR Rail on the continuing refurbishment of London’s Jubilee underground line.

They will be replacing the electrical power supply belts. This is part of a £3.4 million refurbishment contract, and will stabilise the voltage distribution in a number of stations.

Under the terms of the contract, EMCOR Rail will install new main trunkswitches, complete with automatic changeover switches, and voltage stabilisers to automatically regulate the voltage to acceptable levels.

PIX belts are a natural choice for such a demanding working environment. The Underground system presents a highly challenging set of application requirements, to combat the effects of heat, dust and grime. Long service life, high resistance to oil and heat, and highly stringent length tolerances, ensure that PIX products are more than a match for the task.

The operating temperature significantly affects the service life of a power transmission belt. Excessive heat, from any source, is the single biggest detriment to belt life. Heat is generated both internally and externally when a belt is in motion. This effect is obviously exacerbated by unusually high ambient temperatures.

PIX are also one of very few suppliers, who manufacture, and stock, FRAS belts (Fire Resistant, Anti Static). These belts were initially developed with the Coal Board, for use in the mines, but are now in demand for many applications, where there is a significant fire risk. PIX FRAS belts carry the new European ATEX certification for use in mines, refineries, oilrigs, chemical plants etc. and couplings.
